Sometimes an unexpected return shows you an immediate need you didn´t know you had beforehand. The unlikely comeback of German electronic underground legend Ascii.Disko finds a way of reflecting upon our society and the dark corners of the human mind like no one else does these days. From spherical soundscapes to brooding discomfort to euphoria and bliss – what more could one ask for in a record that´s made to mesmerize raving crowds in sweaty clubs?
There´s a trivial saying that sometimes great art stems from necessity – in Ascii.Disko´s case just add a secret plan and a happy accident into the mix and you´re halfway there. Either way you put it: After a decade long hiatus, Germany´s underground legend of dark and minimal electronic music is back with not only one, but three EPs!
So, what happened?
After releasing a couple of acclaimed albums (his eponymous debut in 2003, Alias (2006), Stay Gold Forever Gold (2010) and Black Orchid: From Airlines to Lifelines (2011)) plus 5 EPs and 13 singles between 2003 and 2011, that bridged the gap between electronica, house, techno, indie, punk rock and art like nothing else before, Ascii.Disko took his captivating live and DJ sets all around the globe, building a fanbase of connoisseurs that opened up all doors for him while still keeping him firmly rooted in the underground. As this is a truly enviable position to be in, why did he give it up in 2011? Well, when the closest partners (labels and distributors) are experiencing financial troubles, some even closing down and there´s an overall tectonic shift in the whole business that a seems to emphasize more on the marketing aspects than the music and the artistic expression behind it, one day you might wanna ask yourself why you´re in this for the first place.
So, off he went to the balearic island of Mallorca with his wife, Spanish artist Ana Laura Alaez, started building and riding Choppers, working as a graphic designer and also becoming a tattoo artist. Life can be so sweet. But the music never really left. In the meantime he released a couple of tracks as The Left Hand Path and also in a duo setting as SHDWS, but without any ambition to start another run of the mill any time soon.
Things kicked up gears a bit when in 2019 his wife Ana Laura decided to apply for a scholarship with a video project of hers that secretly intended to include new music of Ascii.Disko. So he contributed the dark, minimal and hypnotic ‘Stillstand’, started to work on new ideas and warming to the idea of bringing Ascii.Disko back to life, when the harddisk of his studio computer crashed and erased the entire new music he had written so far. What sounds like a catastrophe that could have easily marked the final nail in the coffin for any new musical ambition instead proved to be the decisive factor for the new sounds we´re about to experience.
Ascii.Disko set up a minimal but effective little studio and started from scratch – just like in his formative years at Hamburg´s Schanzenviertel – and soon found himself in a constant flow with new ideas coming quickly raw and direct – and by accident or not – sounds and circumstances that are shockingly reflecting the times and the world we find ourselves to live in.
The spherical ‘Todos los conciertos’ pulls you in, the brooding and minimal ‘Stillstand’ (the track he contributed to the video project of his wife Ana Laura Aleaz) sets the tone repeating “can´t run away from myself” whilst building up a teeth-gnarling tension that finds a release in ‘Selbstaufgabe’ a pumping EBM banger that climaxes in a bliss of swirly synth. The pulsating and hypnotic ‘Widerstand’ calms things down again, only to keep you nodding along in eager expectation where Ascii.Disko might take you next – and you can almost hear the club roar in collective liberation when the noisy breakdown of ‘Todas las noches’ sets in before gently guiding the listener out to the ultra-catchy sequencer sounds of ‘So Anders’ in which Ascii.Disko reflects on his early years in Hamburg, only to give way for the threatening motoric techno beat of ‘Unter die Haut’ whose follow up ‘Dieser Beat wird uns töten’ is getting everybody up again for what looks like some balearic house sunshine – only to find themselves deep inside of the gloomy hole in the middle of the track. The motoric hypnoshuffle of ‘Todo vacío’ will have everybody hyponitized in under two minutes listening time before the enticing electronic sounds of banger ‘Die Nacht’ will spread their wings of pure euphoria.
The atmospheric soundscapes of ‘Messer’ comforts the listener like a friend´s hug at the collective Come Down before the minimalistic and pumping ‘Unter Wellen’ is steering steadily into a dusky Autobahn – leaving the audience to repeat the whole experience all over again.
‘Todos los Conciertos, Todas las Noches, Todo vacío’ has all the ingredients of a proper classic – and is nothing short of a sensational comeback we all didn’t know how badly we needed it.
