Ascii.Disko - Oscuridad / Death is Birth
Musician and DJ Ascii.Disko presents two very special new tracks: “Oscuridad” and “Death is birth”. They are his farewell to his incarnation as Ascii.Disko.
“Oscuridad”, with lyrics in Spanish, is an unfinished theme from 2008. It was supposed to be the starting point of a collaborative project with musician Coco Cielo, who lent his voice, but that was cut short by Coco’s unexpected death. For this reason, the track was left behind in their archives.
Coming to terms with the tragic hate crime of one of the most emblematic stars of the Spanish electronic music scene, using creativity as the only tool for atonement, has been very hard. The strength to finish this unpublished track comes form a romantic notion that wants to see music as a tool that transcends reality. As something capable of transcending death itself, something capable of negotiating with the harsh truth of tragedy.
As well as his talent as DJ and musician, Coco was an amazing mediator between artists. He personally sought and invited many musicians to be resident DJ’s at his clubs. Creators that, for different reasons, he thought were of interest. Coco himself invited Ascii.Disko to have his first gig in Spain back in 2003, and since then, Spain became Ascii’s place of residence.
From the outside, it wasn’t easy to see how two so apparently different personalities could be friends and accomplices. Their wildly contrasting aesthetics were, if anything, a language they shared, not a difference. They created a virtual mirror of each other, with Coco’s wonderfully eclectic, unclassifiable look, and Ascii.Disko’s tattooed biker style. For them, the important point was that they’d both constructed their own aesthetic visual languages. They were also united in their shared idea that music is in itself a way of life. They both agreed that it was a field without rigid borders or definitions. Dark, abstract, irreverently punk but yet, danceable, lurking beneath it all. And they wanted to develop this, see where it would take them. That’s something they could do together, sharing the same hedonistic approach and a constant dissatisfaction “Oscuridad”, Ascii.disko explains, is his public homage to a great friend.
“Death is birth” is the other track available in this set. It’s Ascii.Disko’s swan song. The artist, who started the project, has now decided to say goodbye in this fashion. It’s a ritual ceremony to say farewell to a 10 year-long project. As the artist himself explains, this farewell is also a new beginning.
Even though “oscuridad” still has that melodic, pop, yet dark touch that goes straight to the guts to make you dance and which have been Ascii.Disko’s trademark for a decade, we can sense a change in direction that was already being explored in “Black Orchid”, his most intimate work to date.
“I need to say an official goodbye to something that I invested so much in, and yet it allowed me to generate so many other, different things as well”. Ascii.Disko doesn’t want to reply yet when asked if there will be other projects under different aliases, but it’s not hard to see that he’s still hard at work in what he does best: music.
It’s easy understand this need to carry on creating, free from the shackles of definitions attached to a brand name. So many creative minds are too painfully aware of the limitations and tyranny imposed by the market, which often stunts natural growth. Being witness to this paradoxical phenomenon within the electronic music, can be a wake up call for many artists.
Daniel Gerhard Holc doesn’t wish to get stuck in a name that he feels he doesn’t identify with anymore, with the only purpose of surviving commercially. He thinks that to create something new, you have to destroy what came before. He wants to enjoy experimenting with a wider musical spectrum, without worrying about the outcome. But above all, he wants to experiment without expectations from others.
For the moment, he’s already left a huge mark as Ascii.Disko. We no doubt will hear from him again.

Ascii.Disko - Oscuridad / Death is Birth
El músico y D.J Ascii.Disko presenta dos nuevos tracks muy especiales: “Oscuridad” y “Death is Birth”. Con ellos se despide de este alias.
“Oscuridad”, con título y letra en castellano, es un tema que se quedó estancado en el año 2008. Suponía el pistoletazo de salida de un proyecto conjunto con Cocó Cïelo, pero la muerte inesperada de Cocó, que puso la voz en este tema, hizo que esta grabación se quedara suspendida en sus archivos hasta hoy.
Ha sido muy duro intentar olvidar con creatividad el asesinato de odio de uno de los músicos más emblemáticos de la escena electrónica española. La fuerza para editar este tema inédito procede de ese pensamiento romántico acerca de la música como posibilidad de transcender la realidad. Como posibilidad de transcender incluso la muerte o, al menos, de buscar formas de negociar su tragedia.
Cóco- además de sus propias cualidades indiscutibles como músico y dj - era un gran mediador entre otros artistas. Personalmente se encargaba de traer a sus clubs de residencia, a creadores que por diferentes razones le parecían interesantes. Cocó fue quien invitó a Ascii.Disko a actuar en vivo en el año 2003 en España, que se convirtió desde entonces en su lugar de residencia habitual.
Nadie podía entender que dos seres tan distintos en apariencia pudieran ser amigos íntimos y cómplices. La diferente apariencia de cada uno de ellos no era un impedimento sino más bien todo lo contrario. Se creaba un espejo virtual hecho con la estética maravillosamente inclasificable de Cocó y los múltiples tatuajes de motero de Ascii.Disko. Para ellos lo esencial era construir un propio lenguaje. Les unía un aspecto inherente en la música como una forma en sí misma de vida; coincidían que era un campo sin límites ni definiciones. Había un sustrato punk, abstracto, oscuro y a la vez bailable que había que desarrollar más. Y eso lo podían hacer juntos, unidos por un mismo impulso de hedonismo e insatisfacción constante. “Oscuridad”, según las propias palabras de Ascii.Disko, es una manera de homenajear públicamente a un gran amigo.
“Death is Birth” es el otro tema de esta publicación. Remarca el punto final de Ascii.Disko. Es el propia artista que –lo mismo que decidió dar vida a este proyecto en su día- decide acabarlo ahora. Como si de una ceremonia ritual se tratara, marca el final de un proyecto de diez años. Según él, es a la vez una despedida y un punto de partida.
Si bien en “Oscuridad” quedan aún presentes el toque pop y melódico tenebroso que va directo al estómago para hacerte bailar, y que le ha caracterizado a Ascii.Disko a lo largo de una década, aquí se intuye un cambio que ya dejaba patente esta nueva dirección en “Black Orquid”, su trabajo más poético e intimista.
“Necesito decir adiós oficialmente a algo en el que he dado mucho de mí para poder generar otras cosas“. Aunque se niega a responder si habrá un nuevo proyecto con un sobrenombre diferente, se puede fácilmente intuir al oírle hablar que ASCII.Disko está trabajando intensamente con lo mejor que sabe hacer: música.
No es difícil entender la necesidad de seguir creando sin las ataduras que obligan a estancarse en una definición única. La mayoría de los creadores tras una trayectoria personal son muy conscientes de cómo el mercado impone y paraliza una evolución natural. Influye ser testigo a lo largo de todo este tiempo de una paradójica situación a todos los niveles de la música electrónica.
Daniel Gerhard Holc no desea aferrarse a un nombre con el que ya no se siente identificado, con el único fin de sobrevivir comercialmente. Es de la opinión que para crear algo nuevo hay que destruir lo anterior. Quiere disfrutar de componer con un amplio espectro musical sin pensar en el resultado posterior. Pero sobre todo, anhela experimentar sin que se espere nada concreto de él. Por el momento, deja un rastro importante como Ascii.Disko. Sin duda, se sabrá de él.
